If you were going to climb Mount Everest, you wouldn’t just pack a bag, book a flight and leave, you’d have to plan. The digital marketing strategy is where you start if you want success with your online marketing.

All Online Activity Needs to Work Together

You create some ads to send to a landing page where you collect email addresses and start email marketing and sending them to more landing pages where you sell stuff. Those that don’t sign up or buy are re-marketed to on Google and Facebook and email lists are segmented on purchases or actions carried out. Depending on what blogs are read a remarketing campaign is used to drive viewers to opt in or other blog content.

This can be taken further by integrating a postal campaign, building relationships with target audiences on social media channels and creating content that helps move them along the digital sales process.

They can be as simple as this or way more complex.

What Influences the Strategy?

Primarily budget and desired target growth.  

Once these are known all the channels to be used can be evaluated. For example, your existing data will be reviewed as part of the process, competition evaluated, market place investigated to gain an insight in to what it will actually take to achieve the goal and what your target audience does online.

How Many Campaigns?

Depending on budget, multiple campaigns will be needed to bring in the new business needed to achieve the target growth. The more campaigns that can be run the better – don’t place all hope on one campaign.

This can work in different ways for different businesses. For instance, a sports shop will have campaigns running for different sports audiences and within each sport there could be campaigns to appeal to different audiences, such as parents (who may pay) and teenagers who play football.

Today we can integrate, Google Ads, Facebook ads, website visits and postal together as a campaign which then crosses between virtual and real-world marketing.

Part of Your Business Plan

Your business plan will include managing the growth and what happens when the new business comes in. If large growth is required questions will be asked about how you’ll manage the increased business as part of the digital marketing strategy. It’s important that customer service is maintained or improved during any period of growth.

Measuring Success

Before starting, some agreed points of reference will be determined so that we know when progress is happening. It’s not uncommon to evaluate results based on the same month the previous year as opposed to month on month, because of fluctuations in sales for different parts of the year.

Once agreed a dashboard will be created to monitor results and a monthly review looks at the progress.
